The problem of binge drinking is one of the great ills of the modern age, with a good deal of effort being put into tackling the issue and trying to get people to approach alcohol with a more responsible attitude.

So it is heartening to see that Bradford, which so very often scores badly in health-related surveys, coming out with the lowest levels of binge drinking in the region.

Although abuse of alcohol is a major problem, and no-one should become complacent because of these statistics from the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Public Health Group, this is perhaps a sign that the message is getting through.

But while Bradford is at the bottom of the list of heavy drinkers in the region, it should be noted that the region itself is the worst place in the country for binge-drinking.

No-one wants to spoil anyone's fun, especially at this festive time - indeed, health bosses themselves admit that "enjoying a drink with friends is an important part of the social fabric of our region".

But the damage done by heavy drinking cannot be denied, and those who binge on alcohol are only storing up problems such as liver disease and drink dependency for later life.

A great deal of work has already been done by various agencies including the NHS, the police and social services to get people to drink responsibly.

They should take heart from Bradford that their pleas might be being listened to, and build upon that to ensure that more people heed their warnings.
