Guiseley endured a long night but progressed in the UniBond League Challenge Cup with a hard-earned victory at Gateshead thanks to two goals in as many minutes in the

second period of extra time.

They also had cause to be thankful for a stroke of good fortune that took the second-round tie into the extra half hour.

Liam Radford's 12th-minute opener for the hosts was only equalised by a debatable penalty just before the hour mark.

The ball appeared to strike the hand of Michael Laws, rather than the defender attempting to handle it, but the referee pointed to the spot. Dave Henry lashed the ball in - and he also netted in the 93rd minute to put Guiseley in front for the first time.

Gateshead came back to level through Adam Johnston in the 106th minute but goals from on-loan Bradford City defender Sam Denton and David Cooke saw the visitors through to the third round.

Meanwhile, top-eight finishes in the Northern Counties East Premier Division for Thackley and Liversedge last season saw them qualify for the Presi-dent's Cup and they are both in first-round action in the in-house competition tonight.

Thackley have home advantage against Division One

outfit Yorkshire Amateurs and it will provide a speedy opportunity for the club's fans to show their appreciation.

The team won through to the last 32 of the FA Vase on Saturday and they will next face either Coalville or Arnold Town, who drew 3-3 first time out.

Manager John Boyle will stick with the squad that did so well to beat Colne 2-1 at the weekend, although two players will not make the final cut. FA rules allow five substitutes, while only three are permitted in league knockouts.

Liversedge face the tough prospect of a trip to Premier Division rivals Sheffield on the back of their exit from the FA Vase at Leamington.

Sedge boss Eugene Lacy makes several changes to his squad but they are not due to any reaction from the 2-1 defeat in the midlands.

There are players knocking on the door and Lacy needs to run the rule over them.
