A nightclub has admitted making too much noise despite having been ordered to keep quiet.

The licensees of an Ilkley nightclub were sentenced yesterday after admitting to breaching noise abatement orders.

Joint licensees of Il Travatore, Alfredo Ciesla of Skipton and Jose Mora of Keighley were handed a two-year conditional discharge at Bingley Magistrates.

Bradford Council's environment health department handed these to the Leeds Road club on June 4, 2004.

The investigations which led to the orders following complaints from residents at Tower Court, Leeds Road.

The orders were broken on November 21, 2004 and February 6, 2005, when environmental health officer, Richard Huysers found excessive noise levels at the site, poor noise insulation and missing windows.

A witness statement from Graham Skelton, a resident at Tower Court, said: "I continue to lose sleep and cannot tolerate it any longer. The club does not appear to care about the residents."

The club has been at the centre of allegations of late night revelling and anti-social behaviour for two years.

Resident's opposed the club's application for a new license in February 2005, but the licensing panel granted a six-month bid with various conditions attached. The closing hour was reduced from 3am to 2am, which was appealed by the club.

The licensees were told at court that they would be back facing fines of £20,000 each if the orders were ignored.

Magistrate John Longford said: "A balance has to be taken on the residents and the nightclub."

Mr Longford said no electrical equipment had been used by the environment health department to give the court a measure of how loud the noise.

The court was told that the club had employed a doorman and soundproofing had been installed.

The club was ordered to pay costs of £4,080.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We are pleased the court found in our favour but disappointed with the level of the penalty.

"However, we will continue to monitor the situation and should there be any more breaches of the noise abatement notice we will not hesitate to instigate legal proceedings."
