A surprise re-enactment of a wedding which took place 50 years ago left a golden couple lost for words at the weekend.

Klara and Brian Ashton, from Haworth, had no idea what their daughters were planning at the Rendezvouz Hotel in Skipton on Saturday -- until they saw a 'vicar' and bridesmaids in Austrian-style outfits.

Youngest daughter Wendy Edgar, who organised the mock wedding along with sister, Janet Forrest, said: "We had a fantastic time. We were all in tears.

"It took months to organise and we all had a hand in it. My mum and dad were so excited, but didn't know what was happening. It was all so personal and it made my mum gulp."

The whole day was a family affair with Wendy's husband dressed as a vicar while Wendy and sister Janet donned Austrian outfits, one of which belonged to their mother. Janet's husband Mick Forrest also dressed up -- as Elvis.

Wendy, who brought her own wedding dress for her mother to wear, added: "She didn't recognise my husband.

"It was like a sitcom. We wanted to do something different"

Meanwhile, Klara said: "It was fantastic, what a surprise. I was choked up and had tears in my eyes. I hadn't a clue they were organising this. I was gobsmacked and just couldn't believe it."

Janet's daughter Amy, who was unable to attend, made her presence felt with a short rendition of Edelweiss sung onto a pre-recorded CD. Saturday's re-enactment was a spruced-up version of the wedding Klara and Brian had back in 1955, which had few flowers and decorations.

Wendy noted her father had nearly forgotten to turn up at the original wedding -- and had to run to the register office in Keighley.

Added Wendy: "Mum was asked back then whether she wanted a nice wedding or her house decorating. With mum being so tidy she said 'I want my house decorating'. We gave them something today that we knew they would really enjoy."

On the same day her mother was also given a 70th birthday bash.

Klara and Brian will celebrate their real wedding anniversary on December 3.

The couple met originally met in 1954 when Klara moved from Austria to England -- and into the same street as Brian.
