Vandals have desecrated Cullingworth War Memorial for the second time in eight months.

Youths ripped up plants and used the soil to daub letters on three sides of the memorial on Monday night.

They tore off messages from the Remembrance Day wreathes and threw them away.

The gang of around 12 youths also threatened Cullingworth parish councillor John Coultous, who approached the youths, telling them to stop.

Cllr Coultous yesterday branded this latest incident as "disgusting".

Cllr Coultous said: "I am really outraged. I can't believe the mentality of these youngsters, and so soon after Armistice Day.

"They are supposed to be the citizens of tomorrow, yet they don't seem to know what the war memorial represents."

Fellow parish councillor Liz Balding said the youths were from the area and between nine and 14 years old.

Sgt Esther Hobbs, of Bingley neighbourhood policing team, appealed for information about the incident. She said: "For anyone to attack a war memorial is pretty despicable. We will make every effort to catch those responsible.

"I would ask anyone who saw anything of the incident to contact us and help identify those people."

The memorial has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

In March youths ripped up turf from around that area and pelted cars with the mud. People with information should phone 01274 361122.
