SOUTH Craven School completed the first half of what would be a memorable double last Saturday.

Its year seven boys' team lifted the Yorkshire Powergen Schools Nines trophy in front of thousands of fans at Hull's KC Stadium before the Great Britain versus Australia Tri-nations game.

They beat Castleford High School 8-4 thanks to a display full of grit and determination.

Now the girls' year seven team is hoping to emulate the boys when they compete in the Yorkshire final against North Halifax School before the Tri-nations final at Elland Road this Saturday.

Fantastic defence was the cornerstone of the boys' victory.

Despite an injury to their captain Jamie Stephenson after the first tackle of the game, South Craven took the lead with a try from Nathan Genery.

They then withstood wave after wave of pressure from the big Castleford side, but finally conceded with just five minutes to go.

The impetus was now with the South Yorkshire side but South Craven had other ideas. They weathered the storm and, with three minutes to go, Genery got his second try which proved to be the match winner.

The final whistle was the cue for huge celebrations among the South Craven players, coaches and supporters in the stands.
