MORE art, music and history will be on offer as Ilkley Arts Festival presents another week of events ahead.

Ilkley Arts Federation's annual festival, formerly known as Ilkley Autumn Arts Festival, continues tonight when Professor Wendy Childs of Leeds University talks about the English medieval cloth trade.

Prof Childs' lecture, Byeswate Fine, Good Carseyes, Grenegays, is being organised by Olicana Historical Society at Church House, Church Street, tonight as part of the festival.

Ilkley artist Joy Godfrey will open the doors of her studio to share some the secrets of her techniques on Sunday (see right).

Distinguished composer Arthur Butterworth will visit St John's Church, Ben Rhydding, to share his interest in and knowledge of Scandinavian music on Wednesday. Mr Butterworth has composed symphonies, concertos, brass band music and settings of poems by the Bronte sisters. He has been invited to present an evening on Music from Sweden at St John's Church Hall, by Wharfedale Recorded Music. The event is free to guests and includes refreshments. More details are available by calling Barbara Satterthwaite on (01943) 601538.

Visitors who take a liking to Swedish culture will be able to learn and hear more in two further events taking place as part of the Ilkley Arts Festival in December. Maj Sanders will give a talk on Swedish Christmas Traditions at The Manor House Museum on Thursday December 1, and The Dales Spelmanslag will stage an informal evening of Traditional Swedish Music at the museum on December 2. Advance booking is essential for this event and places can be booked by calling (01943) 609393.

In the week ahead, festival-goers can meanwhile learn more about Ilkley Past and Present, in an illustrated talk organised by Ilkley Civic Society on Thursday, November 24. Church House will be the venue for the talk on the architecture and history of the town, plus seasonal refreshments.

Admission is free and more information about the event is available by calling Alex Cockshott on (01943) 601561.

The final Ilkley Arts Festival event of November will be a film at Ilkley Playhouse. Ilkley Film Society will show Downfall which follows the final twelve days of the Third Reich in and around Hitler's bunker. Tickets cost £4 and more information is available by calling Richard Fort on (01535) 653471. The screening begins at 8pm.

The festival has a number of major events yet to come, including more films and concerts. It runs until Sunday December 18, when noted Ilkley-based tenor James Griffett will direct his annual concert in aid of charities which help street children around the world. Copies of the Ilkley Arts Festival programme are available from Ilkley Tourist Information Office.
