Bingley Harriers held their Annual Junior Presentation evening with team managers, coaches and officials and star athletes turning out in their best bibs and tuckers in a glittering, Oscar-style ceremony.

Alan Green was the Master of Ceremonies and life size oscars and fanfares greeted the budding young athletes many of whom at their tender age have already had representative honours at county, regional and national level.

The evening started with the club honouring the unsung heroes, over 100 volunteers, helpers and officials who run the club week in week out. Each volunteer received a token Bingley Harriers enamelled badge together with a big thank you.

The main volunteer award, a specially minted medal, was presented to Christine Oates, the Junior Coaching Co-ordinator who was nominated by the club for the National Year of the Volunteer Award for commitment to athletics.

Out of all sports there has only been 401 medals awarded in this category throughout the UK and Bingley Harriers have been lucky enough to have a person chosen. Christine turned down the chance to go to the official ceremony in Leeds as it clashed with training night at Beckfoot.

The club's cross-country awards rewarded Otley's Oliver Webster, Lucy Mayho, Thomas Crowley and Holly Craig with top awards for an outstanding season.

In the Sports Hall medals and certificates had already been presented to the age group winners but the overall award for outstanding multi-event performances, the 'CD Trackstar Trophy' went to Philippa Hodgson and Hayley Sharpe (shared) and the 'Junior CD Trackstar' went to Andrew Russell. The Keith Firm Memorial Plate went to Harrison Foster for excellence in the indoor athletics competitions.

The inaugural Ken Smith Fell Championship awards were given to the winners of each age group and the overall champions were Horsforth's Alistair Brownlee and Alice Fulton. Most Improved athlete was Otley's Sam Webster.

The winner of the Harry Holmes Trophy for the accumulation of a number of club races and events was presented to Sam Webster.

The boys' and girls' Young Athletes Track and Field League squad has had a successful season finishing in the top five clubs in Division One. The individual contributions were rewarded with medals for the top three scorers in each age group.

The Patrick Megan Young Athlete-of-the-Year award for the best performance in the League went to Carly Robertson.

In the summer athletes of all ages took part in the Annual Pulton Cup competition and certificates were awarded to all plus medals for the first three in each age group.

The overall Pulton Winners were Elizabeth Gouldsborough and Philippa Hodgson.

The club's junior representatives, some 17 athletes ranging from county to national level, were honoured with a series of slides outlining their achievements.

The top award of the evening the Bingley Harriers Hound-of-the-Year was awarded by the junior Club Mascot Hound Dog.

All 12 Hound-of-the-Month winners were nominated for the award and the winner was Alistair Brownlee. Alistair represented West Yorkshire Schools at cross-country and was selected to run in the London Mini-Marathon. He represented Yorkshire at cross-country and has represented England in the U-16, 18 and 20 fell and mountain running teams coming home with individual and team medals. Alistair has also represented Great Britain in the U-20 World Triathlon.

Skyrac AC

Last Sunday may have seen the last Kelbrook Fell Race because after eight years Barry and Karen Slater have decided that they can no longer organise the race they initiated to commemorate their daughter Charlotte who died of cancer.

The Slaters have raised over £26,000 for the Candlelighters but have now decided it is time to move on. The event has always attracted not only a good turn out but also a quality field, if only because it did not clash with any other local race, and 120 senior runners turned up last Sunday to supplement the junior races entries.

Race winner was Mark Horrocks (Wharfedale) in 23.50 and for Skyrac Martin Farrar was 41st in 29.44 and Graham Breeze was 57th, and First V60, in 31.15.

Next weekend sees the finale of the Skyrac's ten race Derek Emsley Memorial Fell Championship at Great Whernside which will decide whether Martin can retain the trophy or Graham wrest it back in his declining years.

Skyrac AC is based at Nunroyd Park on the Guiseley/Yeadon boundary and enjoys the facilities of the magnificent ANSA clubhouse. Skyrac can be contacted via www.skyrac.org.uk or 01943 874046.

Otley Athletic Club

Last Sunday saw 15 runners competing in the popular handicap series. This time it was a five and a half mile circuit from Esholt village. The course is mostly trail which includes the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and then back along the road from Tong into Esholt.

To aid new participants there were temporary yellow arrows spray painted along the route.

This did help everyone except the two new runner's. Liam Dunne decided once on the canal to turn left instead of right and pay a visit to Apperley Bridge.

Jamil Parapia missed the turning at the Brackendale bridge near Thackley and take the bridge over to Tong.

Instead poor Jamil continued to run almost into Shipley. Realising his mistake Jamil ran back along the main road to Hollins Hill and back to Esholt.

Helen Walsh was first in with a new record breaking the old one by two minutes 20 seconds. Crafty Antonio Cardinale who has a knack of getting easy handicaps was next in 14 seconds later.

All runners completed the course between 41 and 49 minutes.

The Otley finishing order: Helen Walsh 37.07; Antonio Cardinale 40.21; Paul Clifford 33.16; Mark Clifford 35.50; Zac Whitehead 34.21; Mark Blagg 35.58; Sam Gardener 37.10; Tom Hannah 34.48; Graham Stead 37.35; Ray Hawksby 33.07; Phil Robinson 35.22; Dave Hainsworth 39.59; Hannah Peacock 43.50; Liam Dunne who did extra distance 37.45; Jamil Parapia who did much more extra distance didn't record a time.

Training for all standards are on Tuesday's and Thursday's at Cross Green Rugby club.
