Guiseley 2 Kendal Town 2

Guiseley faced a tough replay after drawing 2-2 in the FA Trophy second qualifying round with UniBond First Division side Kendal Town on Saturday writes David Bridson.

Neil Parsley's men led 2-1 going into the final ten minutes but a Lee Ashcroft penalty forced Guiseley to make the trip to Cumbria.

Referee Paul Graham ruled that Lee Connor handled in the box and Ashcroft fired the ball into the top right hand corner.

Guiseley began brightly and would have been ahead early on had Keiron O'Brien made more of Mark Stuart's well placed cross.

It was Kendal however who drew first blood in the eighth minute. Taylor played a good ball to Foster and the club's former top scorer turned O'Brien before slotting the ball over goalkeeper Matt Taylor.

Guiseley heads didn't go down despite conceding. Centre-back Chris Clarke, who found himself again in the makeshift striker role up front, saw a cracking shot turned behind by Kendal 'keeper Salisbury in the 16th minute.

The deserving equaliser came from the resulting corner. Connor found the ball at his feet in the box after several deflections and his shot found the corner of the net.

His leveller clearly gave Guiseley confidence. They pressed for the lead and four minutes later, they got it. Stuart, who was a menace down the left hand side, danced round a Kendal defender before slotting the ball home in the corner.

But Guiseley couldn't afford to relax. Kendal forced them to defend as they looked to get back into the game. Ged Smith's attempt flew just over the bar on 25 minutes. It took a fantastic reactionary save from Taylor to prevent Ricky Mercer's close range effort from going in before half-time.

Guiseley had chances to extend their lead. A Kendal defensive mix-up allowed Matthew Smithard in but he fired over. Stuart was unfortunate not to add a second after his long shot rattled the post.

Though they kept the lead for some 65 minutes, Guiseley's goal came under siege in a second-half Kendal dominated.

Taylor had to remain calm as the Kendal attackers found themselves in strong positions time and time again. Foster, a real nuisance up front, forced Taylor into a sprawling save in the 51st minute. Taylor kept his stance to save again from Foster mid-way through the half.

With Kendal threatening an equaliser, Guiseley realised they had to take action. Neil Parsley made a double substitution as he brought on Simon Parke and David Henry in a bid to notch a third. But the substitutions hardly aided Guiseley's cause. They offered little in front of goal. When Guiseley were on the attack, Kendal's resilient defence prevented them from extending their precious lead.

Kendal continued to pressurise in the game's final stages. Foster and Ashcroft hit shots just wide before the penalty was awarded.

Both sides could have won it after the equaliser. Parke hit a shot agonisingly across goal after Taylor made another save to deny Clift at the other end.

Guiseley manager Neil Parsley said: "Our problem is we can't kill sides off. We were very disappointing in the second-half."
