Kendal Town 4

Guiseley 0

DISMAL Guiseley crashed out of the FA Trophy on Tuesday night humbled by UniBond Division One side Kendal Town who cruised through to the third qualifying round and a date with Worcester City on November 26.

Whereas home fans lauded the Kendal performance as their best of the season Guiseley supporters felt that their team had reached rock bottom in terms of performance and they returned home very disappointed.

In this one-sided affair Kendal could have reached double figures as they humbled their UniBond Premier Division opponents.

It was somewhat surprising then that Guiseley dominated the first 15 minutes of the match with some aggressive, pacy football that appeared to have Kendal on the back foot.

However, it was the home team's first goalscoring opportunity of the evening on 19 minutes that changed the nature of this cup tie.

Ged Smith found himself in the area with the ball and his shot was parried by Guiseley 'keeper Matt Taylor straight back to him, however this time he pulled it back to Dave Foster on the edge of the area who made no mistake and put Kendal into the lead.

At this point Guiseley still looked in the game and capable of coming back. However, James Salisbury in the Kendal goal held onto everything that Guiseley fired at him.

There were also excellent performances from defenders Paul Rigby, Paul Sparrow and Nigel Taylor who spurned many of Guiseley's attacks.

Movement through the Town midfield was excellent with Ian Kilford supplying a number of top class balls to former West Brom and Wigan forward Lee Ashcroft and his strike partner Dave Foster.

Ged Smith on the left wing was in good form as well running through the Guiseley defence at will and he got his just desserts when on 31 minutes his strike from the edge of the box made it 2-0.

Kendal could have been 5-0 up at half- time as both Ashcroft and Stuart Cliff failed in one-on-one chances with Matt Taylor.

Just before the half-time whistle the ball rebounded off the post for Kendal leaving Guiseley the opportunity to punish Kendal in the second-half for missing those three prime scoring chances.

However, the home supporters had no need to worry as Russ McKenna poked the ball over the line from a corner in the 48th minute to give Kendal a three goal lead.

From there on it was one-way traffic and chances went begging for Kendal left, right and centre. In a repeat of the original tie Kendal were awarded a penalty late on which Ashcroft put away to secure Kendal's route to the next round.

Kendal are now unbeaten in seven matches whereas for Guiseley this was their first defeat in six games.

Manager Neil Parsley now has some hard work to do to get his side back on track in the league. This was a bitter blow to the club as a whole as they rely on winnings from FA competitions to keep them on an even keel.

Defeat by Kendal has cost them an immediate £2,000 in prize money. They are now left to battle for a promotion play-off place in the UniBond League and to retain the West Riding FA Cup.

On Saturday Guiseley travel to Matlock Town.

The Reserves who defeated Chorley 2-1 on Tuesday night will entertain Otley Town in the Wharfedale FA Challenge Cup with the side's battling for a semi-final place. The match at Nethermoor Park kicks-off at 1.30 pm leaving time for extra-time and penalties if necessary.
