A man threatened to jump out of a bedroom window with his baby after a domestic row early today.

Police negotiators spent nearly three hours talking to the man, who was stood at the first-floor window with the 12-month-old child in his arms, before persuading him to give himself up.

The baby was unharmed.

Police were alerted at 4am when a woman, in her 20s, went to Brighouse police station and said she had been assaulted.

Officers then went to the house in Malham Road in the town.

The man, also aged in his 20s, refused to let officers in and went to the upstairs window, holding the baby and saying he was going to jump out.

Police secured the area and talked to the man until a trained negotiator arrived at 5.30am.

Just before 7am the negotiator succeeded in persuading the man to let him in and the child was released and taken to relatives.

The man was led from the house and taken to Brighouse police station for questioning.

He was also unharmed.

A police spokesman said it was a domestic incident involving a couple and their child.

A spokesman for Brighouse police said: "Officers went to the house but the man refused them entry and took the 12-month-old child hostage.

"He was stood at the first-floor bedroom window and was holding the baby in his arms and threatening to jump, but he did not climb out of the window.

"We kept talking to him and the force negotiator eventually managed to gain entry and persuade the man to give up the child.

"He is now under arrest and the woman will be allowed to return to the house.

"The child is now in the care of relatives."
