Car parking could be given a radical overhaul in an effort to transform the fortunes of a town.

Campaigners say businesses are suffering from the the continuing problems of a lack of proper parking facilities, and want concerted action for change.

This week senior councillors agreed to work with Brighouse Regeneration Forum towards a solution, starting with a survey on car park usage.

But they were warned that any changes could have "far-reaching" consequences across the district, and said any changes had to be in line with parking policies.

But forum member Councillor Paul Rogan said there were already inconsistencies.

He said: "The only places you have to pay to park at swimming pools are in Brighouse and Elland, nowhere else in Calderdale.

"Parking should be looked at in the town alone and not just as an outlying area of Calderdale.

"The situation in Brighouse is getting worse. People should be encouraged to come into the centre and there are things we can do to help that."

The forum wants time-restricted on-street parking bays to stay but to be enforced to stop all-day parking.

They also want car parks to offer the first hour free and £150 yearly permits for town centre workers.

But they were told the costs involved could be too high.
