Mental health experts from across Airedale gathered at a Keighley shopping centre on Tuesday to encourage health from head to toe.

The event, at the Airedale Shopping Centre, was part of a week-long campaign across the district in support of World Mental Heath Day on Monday .

Information stands, free health checks and complementary therapies were available to shoppers. Two-for-one swimming vouchers were also given away as well as free passes to Fitness First.

The theme of this year's campaign is "Mental and Physical Health across the Life Span", which recognises the close relationship between physical health and well being at all stages of life.

Celebrity gardener and author Alan Titchmarsh gave his support to the campaign. He said: "Taking up gardening is a good way of protecting your physical and mental health whatever your age."

The campaign was kicked-off by Ian Clayton, presenter of the popular YTV series 'My Yorkshire', in the Arndale Shopping Centre in Bradford on Monday.

Other features included free activities for the over 50s at Keighley Leisure Centre, presentations to winners of a secondary school poetry competition by Bradford Bulls and the Keighley Cougars, a launch of Bradford MIND's 10th Year Anniversary Celebrations by Bradford's Lord Mayor and a treasure hunt around Shipley.

As many as one in four people of all ages, religions and cultures experience mental health problems at some stage of their lives, ranging from the stresses and worries of everyday life to specific diagnosed mental health problems such as anxiety, depression or schizophrenia.

This can lead to poorer physical health and increased risk of physical illness. Similarly, poor physical health can lead to symptoms of depression and other mental health related problems.
