Leading young artists from Bradford have been showing off their skills at the launch of a national scheme which was first piloted in the city.

The young people's Arts Awards recognises the development of young artists and arts leaders. In total 60 young people from Bradford completed the scheme in the summer and some attended the national launch of the scheme at the Royal Opera House in London yesterday.

Breakdancer and visual artist 18-year-old Lloyd Thompson performed alongside Original Heroes, a group of Bradford breakdancers.

Lloyd gained a silver arts award by combining his love of drawing with breakdance.

For the award he taught three different classes of differing age groups and produced a book of artwork with dancers in different positions. Whilst completing the award, Lloyd took one his classes to perform at the Bradford Mela over the two days.

Lloyd said: "Through doing this award a lot of my skills have increased and I am glad and proud to say that I have achieved it." Annie Crabtree also gained a silver award and her work was displayed at the launch event.

Aged just 15, Annie decided to set up a digital photography club, even though she was still a beginner in photography herself. And as Annie learnt more about digital photography and photography so did her club members. Minister for Culture David Lammy attended the launch. He said: "The Arts Award is a wonderful way for young people to be inspired by and to inspire others through the artform they love." The awards are available in gold, silver and bronze and they will be awarded to teenagers across the country.

Teachers, youth workers and arts workers will be trained as awards advisers.
