Picking an all-rounder of the year for either division shouldn't be too difficult after the 2005 SDS Bradford League season.
East Bierley's Jaffer Nazir topped the bowling averages and was an impressive seventh in the batting in Division One, while it was even more clear cut in Division Two, Keighley's Richard Robinson
finishing way ahead in the
bowling and fourth in the batting.
Chris Taylor might not have
broken the aggregate run record for Division One but the Yorkshire second-teamer did have the consolation of heading the batting averages with 64.71.
League champions Woodlands had two of the top four bowlers in Safraz Ahmed (second) and left-arm spinner Chris Brice (fourth) and the leading wicket-keeper in Nicky Rushworth.
But their batting didn't quite live up to its early-season promise, Paul Winrow leading the way in 11th.
Pudsey Congs, without the
cutting edge of Naveed Rana
ul-Hassan, showed their all-round strength with four players
figuring in the bowling, headed by Mark Bray in ninth.
And they had the highest number of batsmen too, six Congs players averaging over 25.00, led by
skipper Matthew Doidge in 12th.
Bierley and Hanging Heaton had five each and Woodlands and Pudsey St Lawrence four.
Vivek Mahajan's batting helped Morley stay up. He played in 23 matches, and if Bankfoot's
overseas player Aamer Sajjid had played as many times they would probably still be staging Division One games next season.
Baildon showed what fine
individuals they had with Scott Richardson (second in the
batting) and Mushtaq Ahmed and Mohammed Siddiq (third and 13th in the bowling) but will want more from their other players in 2006.
Bierley's Greg Lambert,
sandwiched in sixth place between Cleckheaton's John Wood and Faisal Shaikh, proved a good foil for Nazir, and the
performances of Craig Hitchenor (Farsley), Bray, Nick Summerscales (Hanging Heaton), Glen Roberts (Congs), Mansha Khan (Saltaire), Richard McCarthy (Bradford & Bingley) and Neil Gill (Congs) showed there is no substitute for
experience with the ball.
The same could be said in the
batting for Ashley Metcalfe (Farsley), Doidge, Tim Orrell (Woodlands), Babar Butt (Congs) and Carl Sharp (Bradford & Bingley).
Brighouse had two of Division Two's leading batsmen in Zubair Raje and Atik Ur Rehman, while Ross Towler backed up Keighley clubmate Robinson as the second-best bowler overall.
Hartshead Moor's Kharrum Shezad led the way with the bat, and Ian Wardlaw continued to show promise with the ball in coming fourth. Undercliffe's John Barton was the leading wicket-keeper.
