Young gardeners have got their green fingers back on an annual title.

Haworth Primary School's gardening club has picked up a youth award in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition for the second time in three years.

The club shared the Sir Richard Graham Youth Enterprise title with Keresforth Primary School, Barnsley -- a year after missing out on retaining the title by just one point.

In the process they defeated last year's winners by six points.

They learned of their triumph at the awards ceremony at Cutlers Hall, Sheffield, on Tuesday.

Club founder Steve Thorpe said: "We are chuffed. We have done really well.

"It takes some doing to win it for a second time. A lot of hard work went into it. The kids really deserve it with all that they have done."

The judges said it was an outstanding entry and a pleasure to visit.

It was a double day of celebration for Steve, who is a member of the Haworth in Bloom committee.

In just its fourth year in the contest, Haworth tied for third place in the small country town award with local rivals Addingham. It picked up a certificate of merit.

The pair came seven points behind surprise winners Dunnington, near York.

In previous years it has come ninth, seventh and fifth -- leading Steve to joke that next year the village should win the competition.

Committee member Mike Hutchinson said: "It is great for the school again. The fact that Dunnington has shot up from nowhere has shocked me.

"I am shocked and disappointed that we dropped to joint third. We thought we would come second or third.

"Considering there is only a small number of people doing stuff in the village, imagine what we could do if the whole village pulled together.

"It is still a good result and I am chuffed we have gone up another couple of places."

The judges said: "Haworth is a very good entry where all members and groups of the community appear to be working in harmony."
