Keighley has blossomed in the Yorkshire in Bloom contest.

The town received a silver award in its category in the annual competition.

Judges praised Keighley's positive approach to the venture and the quality of floral displays.

Organisers of the Keighley in Bloom campaign say they are delighted with the town's showing.

Chairman Mike Cunningham, who collected the award at a ceremony in Sheffield on Tuesday, said: "In my three years' involvement I have seen the interest from private individuals and the business sector actively blossom. I am absolutely delighted to be part of this tremendous effort."

Factors that particularly impressed the judges included the quality of displays within sponsored roundabouts and flowerbeds and at Cliffe Castle Park, hanging baskets in the Airedale Centre and bus station area, work by the Friends of Oakworth Park and the Keighley Pride initiative, and the town's best-kept-garden competition.

There was also praise for a portfolio drawn up to provide evidence for each of the Yorkshire in Bloom criteria, which judges said was one of the best they had seen.

The competition also saw an outstanding showing by Hillworth Village, which took second prize in a category for gardens in a new housing development.

And other notable contributors included Riddlesden St Mary's Primary School, The Oaks and The Volunteers.

Mr Cunningham thanked all those who had supported the effort and said the aim now --- over the next three years -- was for Keighley to gain a gold award.

He said sponsorship from businesses would be needed to ensure the target could be met. He added that any flowerbed set up thanks to a sponsor would be maintained by Bradford Council.

The Keighley in Bloom committee, which currently has eight members, is seeking to increase its numbers.
