Skipton has come joint ninth in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition while Addingham has scored a joint third position in the small country town category.

Skipton was one of 11 entries in the small town group and judges say they have high hopes for the town in the future.

It is the first time Skipton has entered the competition in many years.

Following the spring judging Skipton was placed 10th. It went on to gain an eighth position in the summer judging, giving it 301 points overall.

It shares its ninth place with Barton-upon-Humber. Wetherby won the category, achieving 362 points.

Judges commented on the town's entry: "It was a pleasure to see an amazing amount of enthusiasm and participation in such a short period of time.

"With a children's competition full involvement of a prominent local building society, a number of local organisations and volunteers, including the Rotary Club, all prepared to muck in and be part of a community entry.

"The displays were very colourful and clearly a tremendous amount of work has been done. With a more focused route and involvement of more local businesses this entry could sparkle even more in the future."

Town centre manager Chris Aldred said he was pleased with the town's position.

He told the Herald: "It's nice to see we have pulled up between spring and summer and it's improved. As the judges say it's the first effort. We will know how to impress better for next year."

Addingham shares the third spot with Haworth. It scored a total of 345 points and was also awarded the Gordon Crowther Memorial Trophy for the best spring display in a small country town. The winner in its group was Dunnington with 352 points.

Bolton Abbey also received a certificate of merit for the Yorkshire Tourist Board Tourism Award (tourist and visitor attractions).
