A teenager is to take part in a special tribute show in memory of her mum who died after diet surgery.

Chantelle Carroll's mum Sue died last month at Bradford Royal Infirmary's Intensive Care Unit two weeks after a seven-hour gastric bypass operation.

The single mum, who had also been a popular foster mum to around 50 Bradford children, had been battling to lose weight after doctors told her she had to shed pounds so she could have an operation to save her sight.

Now Chantelle, who is 17 and has her own baby son, has gone back to her old dance school to join in rehearsals with pupils at Shipley-based Elgeez Dance Centre in time for a memorial show in November.

The tribute show will be at Baildon's Ian Clough Hall on November 19, and proceeds will go to the Bradford Gingerbread's Christmas Toy Appeal.

Dance centre principal Lindsey Garbutt chose Gingerbread because Sue had been involved at the charity's Darley Street centre for lone parents for 13 years and had served on its management committee.

With help from Bradford Chamber of Commerce and the White Rose Bikers Club, Sue and other volunteers from Gingerbread raised funds to buy thousands of Christmas gifts for children in single-parent families across the district.

"We've got 180 tickets to sell. If it's a sell-out then we'll run it for two nights," said Lindsey, describing Sue as "a rock and an inspiration".

Lindsey added: "We think Sue would have been thrilled to know we are doing this for her and that all the money we make will go towards helping Gingerbread. She was a wonderful, generous and very loving lady.

"Pupils past and present will be performing. Lots of ex-pupils have been in touch to say they wanted to get involved which shows just how much people thought of Sue."

Chantelle said: "I'm really touched so many people are joining me to do this for my mum and for Gingerbread."

Tickets, costing £6, are available from Elgeez on (01274) 530789 or at its reception in Kirkgate.
