Job hunting seminars are being held to help end Bradford's record of having one of the highest rates in the country of school leavers who fail to get jobs, training or further education.

The events in Bradford and Keighley will allow young people to meet employers, careers experts and training providers.

More than one in ten people in Bradford between 16 and 18 years-old are unemployed and not involved in education or training.

There are 1,587 young people who are classed as NEET (not in education, employment or training) - 13.2 per cent of all 16 to 18-year-olds in the district.

This figure is almost double the national average of about seven per cent and is one of the worst rates in the country although it does not include school leavers who have just completed their GCSE,GNVQ and A-level exams this summer.

Careers Bradford is staging the events, called Get Sorted, at Valley Parade, Bradford, on Thursday from 1pm to 4pm and at Cougar Park, Keighley, on Friday from 10am to 1pm.

Organisers said the aim was to ensure every young person who attended the event left with a job offer, an interview or a place on a training course.

Young people attending the event at Valley Parade will be able to meet representatives from the e2e entry to employment project, which was set up by the Learning and Skills Council to find people jobs, and Bradford training providers Caltec.

Bradford Confederations, the three partnerships of secondary schools in the city, Bradford College, Bradford Youth Service and Connexions West Yorkshire will all have staff at the event to advise young people and employers from across the district.

Project manager Alison Everett said: "For young people who do not know what to do next a careers officer can be intimidating.

"These events are being held in neutral places which will appeal to young people.

"We want as many people as possible to attend and we want everyone who comes to the event to come away with an interview."

Young people can get to the event in Valley Parade on a bus service being operated from Bradford Interchange, John Street bus stop and a bus stop at the back of Forster Square between 12.45pm and 4pm.

Buses will also be run between Keighley Railway Station and Cougar Park from 9.45am to 1pm.
