Lesley Vainikolo thanked God and Shontayne Hape for helping him score a dramatic record-breaking sixth try in the final seconds of last night's crushing 49-6 victory over Hull at Odsal.

Hape provided the final pass for five of the big Tongan's scores while God, presumably, gave him the pace to run 80 metres to score the record-clincher with time up on the clock.

"It was in the back of my mind when I scored the fifth one with 11 minutes to go," said Vainikolo of the single-match try-scoring record he himself equalled against Wigan in the opening match of Super League IX.

"Everyone was telling me 'one more, one more'. I just thank the Lord and my partner Shontayne for giving me the ball."

The left-sided combination of Hape, Vainikolo and Brad Meyers proved unstoppable all night.

"We've been working hard and training hard together and we knew what we were capable of doing," added Vainikolo.

"I'm just concentrating on my game. The records are a bonus."

Vainikolo's haul took his tally for the club to 101 in 99 appearances - an achievement he rated as "not too bad".

Perhaps even more remarkable than Vainikolo's outstanding feat, prop Joe Vagana also managed to get on the scoresheet for the first time this season, with Hape, Jamie Peacock and Stuart Fielden also crossing in the ten-try demolition.

Gareth Raynor managed a sole first-half consolation for the visitors, who never managed to shake off their Powergen Challenge Cup final hangover.

The win - their sixth straight - puts the Bulls three points clear of Hull and Warrington Wolves in third place.

Meanwhile, St Helens are odds-on to claim the League Leader's Shield after Leeds Rhinos crashed 24-22 to Wigan at the JJB.

The patched-up Warriors were hammered 70-0 by the Rhinos at Headingley a couple of months ago.

But, despite lacking several internationals, a youthful side showed the future is bright at the JJB Stadium by coming from behind in the dying stages to steal the two points thanks to a Harrison Hansen try and Danny Orr's conversion.
