Skipton'S own Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story has come true for the winners of Whitakers chocolate competition.

Like the factory in the Roald Dahl classic, the Skipton chocolate empire slipped six gold tickets into bags of mis-shapes, which were sold in its High Street shop.

The prize was a tour of the factory and one of the winners was the great-granddaughter of a former apprentice.

The names may be different, but there are striking similarities between the story of Charlie Bucket and Megan Wright, of Carleton.

Megan found one of the famous golden tickets and decided to take her great-grandfather Deryck Oselton with her when she looked around the factory.

Mr Oselton, 82, of Barnoldswick, worked as an apprentice baker there when he was just 15 years old. He told the Herald that it was great to see how the company had developed.

He explained when he worked there the chocolate side of the company was still very small and he would only spend half a day each week learning these skills.

"There was just one room upstairs where the chocolates were made and everything was done by hand - it's all automated now," he said.

Whitakers ran the competition to coincide with the release of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film.

Other winners included a family from Cross Hills and two from Keighley, including Sean, Zoe and Leah Robinson who are pictured above. Another winner was in the area on holiday and Whitakers are waiting to hear from the sixth.

General manager Helen Phipps said that the competition had boosted sales of mis-shapes.
