A father-of-two collapsed and died while playing a five-a-side game of football with his 13-year-old son.

Paramedics battled to revive 34-year-old Stuart Murgatroyd, whose passion was football, after he was taken ill at an indoor sports hall where he was playing a friendly game with friends.

His son, Mark, saw Mr Murgatroyd slump down and he ran to get help from the staff at Marley stadium in Keighley,

They immediately called an ambulance and then placed Mr Murgatroyd in the recovery position and covered him with a blanket. A spokesman for Bradford Council, which runs the sports centre, said staff sat with him to ensure his airways were free until paramedics arrived within minutes.

The medics gave him heart massage in a desperate bid to revive him before taking him to Airedale Hospital at Steeton where he was pronounced dead.

Mr Murgatroyd, who also had another son Lee aged nine, was playing five-a-side with friends at about 6.45pm on Wednesday.

It was the first time his son Mark had joined them.

Mr Murgatroyd, of Emerald Street, Keighley, is understood to have started playing with the group about three months ago.

His sister Jodie Murgatroyd, 35, of Keighley, said her brother was an "excellent dad."

She said he did not work and was a full-time parent. He was separated from the boys' mum, Katherine Pickles, but they kept in close contact.

"He was a good dad and tried his best. It was hard work.

"We were on our own - our mum passed away in 1997, so he has had to struggle and do things on his own," said Miss Murgatroyd.

She said football had been his passion and he had been playing for years, especially five-a-side.

Steve Warner, head of Bradford Council's sport and leisure service, said once his staff were informed that Mr Murgatroyd had collapsed, one member of staff immediately called 999 while the other put the man into the recovery position.

He added: "Paramedics attended promptly, treated him at the scene and took him to hospital. Sadly, we were later informed he had passed away.

"It is a huge shock to us. All our thoughts are, of course, with his family at this sad time."

Bradford coroner's officer Alan Pritchard said a post mortem was carried out yesterday.

He said Mr Murgatroyd had died of natural causes and there were no suspicious circumstances.
