Construction work is to start on new apartments set to transform the Shipley skyline as part of a radical architectural development.

The futuristic buildings are part of the ambitious regeneration of the historic Victoria Mills site on the banks of the River Aire, part of the Saltaire World Heritage Site.

The project is masterminded by award-winning Bradford developers Newmason Properties, which said the of curved glass complex would be of unprecedented style and quality.

Initial work on the radical structure is due to begin next month. Newmason said the concept had already "wowed" planners, who had demanded a ground-breaking design.

The huge project is seen as an integral ingredient of the 2020 Digidale masterplan, which aims to create high quality homes, a vibrant economy and a vastly improved environment in the Aire Valley.

The three new buildings, next to the Grade II listed Victoria Mills, feature rotundas and sail-shaped elevations. Designated as VM1, VM2 and Northern Lights, the towers will provide nearly 300 apartments, most with balconies, overlooking the river or extensive landscaped gardens.

Chairman and co-founder of Newmason Properties Alec Newsham said: "It's going to be like a little village all on its own. You think this kind of living would appeal to the young 25s to 35s but we've found it appeals to all age groups - single, young families and retired.

"And it's on the edge of the moor but only 11 minutes from Leeds."

Newmason is spending £2 million on landscaping which will include distinctive red granite and other materials along with fountains, sunken pools, flowing water and free spaces.

Other features include private parking, CCTV, security, a tennis court, a concierge service and gymnasium.

The innovative building has been designed by local architect and consultant Tony Lupton, of Beckwith Design Associates.

Mr Lupton said the design had been selected to complement Victoria Mills, a former worsted mill which is being refurbished into apartments.

Prices for apartments in the three blocks will range from £120,000 to £300,000.

VM1 is due to be finished next year with VM2 following in 2007 and Northern Lights in 2008.
