A change from Saturday to Sunday heralded one of the most successful ever galas at East Morton.

Organisers were delighted with the crowds for both the procession and events on the village recreation ground.

Villagers came out in force to join the procession, which had adopted the theme of transport. Local Scouts made a tank out of cardboard, while other people rode decorated bikes and quad bikes. Open-top buses and cars took part, along with floats by the play group, St Luke's Church, primary school and Brownies.

Gala field attractions included stunts by Aire Valley Cycles, and unusual bikes including a penny-farthing from Salient Cycles.

Gala treasurer Sue Walsh said: "We haven't finalised the figures yet, but it appears to be one of the more successful galas ever."

Some of the profits from the gala will be spent on next year's event, with the rest being donated to village organisations.

The layout on the gala field was changed this year, with attractions laid out around the Gala Queen's marquee at the top of the hill.

Scouts teamed up with the Royal British Legion to organise refreshments in the nearby Village Institute.

They decorated the Institute with bunting to coincide with national celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The fancy dress judges were Mary Appleby and Roger and Susan Wynne. Roger was given the Graham Irving Trophy to commemorate his retirement after 27 years on the gala committee.

Keighley and Craven Athletics Club staged a Gala run, which covered a three-mile off-road route up to Micklewaite Moor.

Adam Sains received a wooden christening stool donated by Halliday Joiners for bonniest baby up to 12 months. Elizabeth Crossley won the 12 months to two years class.
