Danny Cadamarteri's critics will always jump on his goals ratio.

Six in two-and-a-half years during his first stint at Valley Parade is hardly Roy of the Rovers.

But how often in that time did he actually play as an out-and-out frontman?

Colin Todd has brought Cadamar-teri back with the intention of using him as a centre forward who does his best work in the box rather than around it.

And his double strike as a substitute against North Ferriby last night could be a positive sign of things to come.

But there were no celebrations in front of the Dean Windass Centre for the man himself.

Not that Deano didn't have the chances to open his account with a bang. On another night he could have been up near the five he bagged this time last year at Farsley.

Ferriby goalkeeper Paul Sharp foiled him twice in the first half, the second with an excellent tip-over from a header. And he smothered another low effort soon after the restart.

Throw in a free header which Windass thumped over the bar and a nailed-on penalty shout that was waved aside and it was a frustrating return to his old stamping ground.

"I'm getting all my misses for the season out the way now," Windass smiled afterwards.

The visitors had to wait until seven minutes before the break to turn their pressure into a goal - and it was a first for the impressive Bobby Petta, who at times threatened to play the Humbersiders on his own.

There were often three or even four white shirts swarming around the Dutchman's dancing feet, but he still managed to dig out a trick to find himself some room.

Having put one cross-shot over the bar, Petta got it right second time around as he wriggled past the sliding Rob Dewhurst and rifled a shot over Sharp.

City doubled their advantage just before half-time from the slickest move of the match.

Colin Todd had started with the Tom Kearney and Steve Schumacher partnership in the engine room and both showed neat feet on the halfway line. Schumacher slipped the ball through to Windass, who put it in the path of Marc Bridge-Wilkinson to clip effortlessly past the keeper.

With Ferriby still chasing shadows, City should have gone in three up - but Petta leaned back when set up by Andy Cooke and sent his shot on to the artificial pitch which was funded thanks to Windass.

Todd only made four changes at half-time - Windass, David Wetherall and Mark Bower all stayed on - but two of the new guys wasted no time in making an impression.

Within 80 seconds of coming on, Owen Morrison put a goal on a plate for Cadamarteri, who finished with a stooping header.

It was becoming a cakewalk for City, who had good chances for more. But as the senior faces began to make way, North Ferriby climbed off the floor.

The back four, now minus the Wetherall and Bower axis, were caught napping by a quick throw-in, allowing Carl Fothergill to hammer Ferriby's first after 76 minutes.

Sharp thwarted Cadamarteri's toe-poke from Ben Muirhead's cross and straight away the home side had a second goal as Paul Farley was left in space to loop in a header from Joel Hartley's deep cross.

Chris Gowan blazed over but with five minutes left Ferriby were level as Farley's persistence in keeping the ball in on the touchline was rewarded with a precise shot by Graham Botham into the roof of the net.

But there was still time for Cadamarteri to have the final say. Sharp could only parry Kevin Sanasy's low blast and although the keeper managed to smother Cadamarteri's follow-up, the ball popped up again for the striker to turn in from point-blank range.
