GUISELEY'S Olympic rowing silver medallist Debbie Flood was in action in the World Cup Finals in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Against the backdrop of the Swiss foothills surrounding Lucerne's Rotsee Britain won seven medals on Sunday at the BearingPoint World Cup Finals.

Flood and her partner Elise Laverick claimed bronze in the double sculls.

It was in the quadruple sculls in Athens that Flood won an Olympic silver medal.

She raced in the women's single at the first Rowing World Cup at Eton in May 2005.

She was a finalist in the single scull in Munich after racing a superbly tactical semi-final.

Given the quality of the women's single scull event in Munich, Flood, a relative novice at this level after several years in crew scull boats, had already done well to reach the final.

Drawn in lane six, she was behind at the 500m mark and never really recovered in a race won from the front in her trademark commanding style by the Olympic silver medallist from Athens, Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus in 7:58.02.

Mirka Knapkova of the Czech Republic was second with Georgina Evers-Swindell of New Zealand third. Flood, who has also had to contend with University finals, was sixth in 8:28.19.

"I had a hard race in qualifying and that took a lot out of me," said Flood. "Compared to the top scullers I am still a relative novice but with experience I'll get better so that the gap between my good races and my bad races is not so big."

She won a superb Olympic silver medal in the quad in Athens after a great season when the crew won the World Cups in Poznan and Lucerne and with their silver in Munich were worthy World Cup Series winners.

Flood was the Under-23 World Champion in the single in 2000 and in 2001 sculled in the double with her previous partner Frances Houghton.

They were world junior bronze medallists in 1998 and made an impressive Under-23 debut in 1999, winning gold at the World U-23 Regatta in Hamburg. In 2001 Flood gained her first senior vest finishing 7th at the World Championships.

In 2002 they won the World Cup Series with victories at Hazewinkel and Lucerne, and finished 4th at the World Championships in Seville.

In 2003 Flood raced with Rebecca Romero in the double throughout the season culminating in a 4th place at the World Championships in Milan.

She was a GB junior judo international and a county level 1500m and cross-country runner before she took up rowing.
