MOST people would be thinking of taking things easy after their 50th birthday but energetic John Garwell is preparing to cycle up an Alp or two! His dream of rubbing shoulders with Tour de France stars has come true thanks to a birthday surprise from wife Cathy. On July 23, John will head for the French Alps to attempt the toughest stage of the Tour de France. In just 10 hours, he will cover 118 miles of the steepest ascents, including the Col du Galibier. John, of Belmont Wharf, Skipton, has harboured a desire to take part in the race since childhood, and it has been made possible thanks to Graham Baxter Sporting Tours of Pool-in-Wharfedale, which organises fundraising trips. John will be riding for local charities.
