CHILDREN from across Wharfedale planted oak trees in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, this week.

Pupils from Burley-in-Wharfedale C of E School helped to plant a tree near the bowling green off Grange Park Road, Burley, while another young oak was planted in Ilkley's Riverside Gardens.

Parish councillors and children from Addingham First School each took turns to sprinkle soil around their village tree that now stands next to the bowling green by the Memorial Hall.

These trees were just three of the 36 planted in the Bradford district on Monday and were funded by the city council.

Each one represents a year of Diana's life and Councillor Derek Kettlewell, recreation sub-committee chairman, said they were a 'fitting tribute' to the princess.

"The oak is undoubtedly one of Britain's most majestic tree species and this planting programme will be a fitting tribute to Diana," he said.

"The princess touched the lives of many people, but particularly children, and I am pleased we have been able to involve local schools in the memorial planting."
