Keighley and Craven Athletes were in action on the fells and the road last weekend.

Pete Carr and Tony Knowles were the first locals to finish the 24 mile Rombalds stride, in 3 hours 22 minutes(16th) and(17th). The course which starts and finishes in Guisley and takes in Otley Chevin, was wet after heavy rain and the race was won in 2 hours 58 minutes. Other Keighley Runners were Charles Morthall (3.26) and Pete Fisher (3.39). Colin Crane failed to finish due to injury.

The other major event of the weekend was the Dewsbury 10K, one of the top 10k's in the country. Over 900 runners took part in the fast race. Spencer Newpart of Blackheath Harriers won the race in 29 minutes 7 seconds, the fastest 10k time recorded in the UK this year.

Zip Jones of Keighley and Craven, followed up recent good performances to take a top 25 place with a personal best of 31.55.

Other Keighley times were Liam Spencer 35.20, Paul Wakefield 35.40, Dave Tale 35.50 and an impressive 36.35 from Keith Waddingham who has been improving with each race this year.

l Keighley and Craven runners have a date in Shropshire this weekend as the Fell Runners Association English championship kicks off. The club has based its club fell championship on the FRA series, starting with Sunday's 10.5 mile run over the Long Mynd valleys. The short 'A' race up Pendle Hill on April 4 comes next. Keighley and Craven have also planned a local-based Grand Prix series using some of the old Hill Runners' Summer programme. A revamped Hare and Hounds race at Lothersdale launches the programme on May 17.

n Bingley Harriers are searchingfor top young sporting talent to represent West Yorkshire at Sportshall Athletics.

Last year Uner-13 and Under-15 boys teams from the area went on to represent West Yorks at the regional finals in Teeside and Damian Woo9ds went on to qualify for the national finals in Birmingham.

Schools and clubs have already been notified of the events, but any youngster can give it a try.

The selection meting is at Bingley Grammar School on Saturday, February 28, with registration at 2pm. Entry fee £1.

Boys and girls must have been over 11 and under 15 on August 31 last year.

"Previouse experience is not essential as anyone can attempt to run, jump or throw and they will soon grasp what is required. Sessions are also held atthe school on Tuesday evenings from 7-8pm (under-11's) and 8-9pm (under-15's) at a cost of £1)" said club spokesman alan Oates.

n The Harriers' free training sessions for over-17's who want to run the Bingley Half-Marathon got off to a bright start last week with seven new runners starting out on the road to a 13-mile run.

Any more men or women who want to take part can turn up at Nab Wood Sports Centre on Tuesday's at 7.15. Details are available from Robert Adamson on 01274-597797.
