OSSETT ALBION 2

FOLLOWING their impressive 3-1 win over visitors Colwyn Bay on Saturday Guiseley slumped to an all time low in Tuesday's West Riding County Cup tie which ended with two Guiseley players sent off, a spectator ejected from the ground and striker Bobby Davison tearing his shirt off and throwing it at the dug out when substituted.

Spectators had turned up expecting another improved display from Guiseley after encouraging signs in the games against Leigh and Colwyn Bay.

In the early stages there was little indicat- ion of what was to come and Guiseley appeared to have the upperhand.

Colin Hogarth was lucky to escape with just a yellow card when he made a first-half challenge but the game really boiled over in the 40th minute.

Ossett's Tim Wragg elbowed Guiseley 'keeper Steve Dickinson in the face in an off the ball incident and when skipper Paul Bottomley decided to settle things all hell broke loose.

Bottomley recieved his marching orders along with Dickinson who sought retaliation but the perpetrator escaped.

It was yet another loss of control by Bottomley who will be suspended for the third time this season.

The game moved into the second-half with the match officials feeling the ire of the crowd and it turned to farce when the assistant referee on the stand side objected to something a Guiseley supporter said to him and called over the referee.

The game was held up while the referee spoke to Guiseley officials and ordered the man to be ejected from the ground.

The man had shown no form of physical aggression and the crowd started to slow handclap.

Down to nine men and with right-back Peter Atkinson in goal Guiseley battled hard rallied well by Steve Hook and Des Hazel.

All the players put in 100 per cent as they tried to make up for their numerical disadvantage. Neil Matthews had a shot on theturn taken by the 'keeper and Simon Par ke's long range effort lacked enough pace to trouble the 'keeper.

After 75 minutes Albion took a shock lead through substitute Mark Hopkinson and then made it 2-0 when Guiseley were appealing for a shove on Davison and Ossett were allowed to move away. The ball was played to Darren Morris who rifled it past Atkinson.

The injured Neil Parsley was replaced by Paul Ryan withn 10 minutes to go but when with just a few minutes remaining Davison's number was held up the former Leeds United striker tore off his shirt and threw it at the dug out as he left the field.

Sadly it seems to have been something that was coming for a number of weeks with the

side's leading scorer becoming more and more frustrated.

Colin Hogarth, who had another superb game for Guiseley, produced probably their

best effort with a late volley which 'keeper John Hood tipped round for a corner.

With all the efforts Guiseley's back room workers have made to move the club forward it would be a shame if night's such as this spoil all their hard work.

COLWYN BAY 1

NEIL Matthews made an immediate impact on his return from injury firing in two goals as Guiseley produced a good display against Colwyn Bay.

He opened ther scoring in the fifth minute running on to a through ball from Simon Parke to slot the ball past 'keeper Richie Roberts.

A long range effort by debutant Gary Twynham got a deflection for a corner for the Welsh side and right-back Gary McCosh had a shot on target in the 20th minute but it was Guiseley who took the eye.

They increased their lead in the 25th minute when Des Hazel, soon to return to his coaching role in Australia, picked up the ball from a corner and fired in an excellent goal.

Dickinson did well to tip over a good effort from Colin Caton just before the break.

In the second-half Steve Mann cleared a shot off the line from the impressive young midfielder Lee Elam and then Steve Hook had a header saved on ther line.

In the second-half Guiseley looked to increase their lead and Bobby Davison drew the 'keeper but could not get the ball past

him to Matthews who had an open goal gaping ahead of him.

Guiseley did increase their lead however when Elam made an excellent run and his through ball found Matthews who amidst Colwyn Bay cries for off-side netted to make it 3-0 in the 72nd minute.

Colwyn Bay almost pulled a goal back when Dickinson kicked the ball straight to Limbert and his effort was headed onto the bar by Hook.

Bay did get their reward when in a goalmouth melee the former Gateshead player Gary Twynham headed the ball down from a corner and although the 'keeper took the ball it was adjudged to have been behind the line.

Late in the game Steve Hook made another effort to add to his recent goalscoring exploits when he had a shot on target but Roberts was able to collect.

l Guiseley have had a number of fixtures re-arranged over the coming weeks. They now visit Hyde United on Monday, February 16, with the game the following Saturday at Runcorn being repolaced by a trip to Spennymoor.
