DOUGIE LAMPKIN has been crowned Yorkshire Sports Personality of the Year.

The 21-year-old multi World Trials Champion also took the Achievement Award to mark an incredible 12 months of success for the Silsden rider.

His mother Isobel received the awards on Dougie's behalf at Leeds United's Elland road ground while Doug was on the road as he fights to retain his World Indoor title.

On Thursday night he was at Toulouse in France where his domination of the slipped as he crashed to fifth place after failing to qualify for the all important Grand Final. The Silsden rider failed two sections to put him out of the running.

Steve Colley eventually won the trial after a battle with Spaniard marc Colomer.

But Lampkin bounced back in Barcelona on Friday night with a barn-storming performance which left Lampkin leading the championship on 91 points ahead of Colomer (85) and Colley (74).

"Now I just have to keep it going in the last two rounds which are held in Vienna and Madrid," Dougiesaid.

Farmers son Stephen Calvert won the Bradford District Motor Club trial at Halton Gill in Littondale where riders and officials were soaked by heavy rain and thick hill fog. Stephen's father David grabbed some time off from lambing to take second place in the novice's competition.

Lampkin has swept all before him since winning junior events, but last year was his best season by far. He won the outdoor and indoor world championships, the British Championship - by winning every round - and led Britain to victory in the world team championship.

Despite travelling the world to competitions, he also makes time to attend local trials whenever he is in the country, and spends time passing on his skills to younger riders.

"He is a genuine ambassador for sport and is a worthy winner of the Achievement and Sportsman of the Year awards," said a spokesman for Yorkshire Electricity sponsors of the awards
