Jedi knight light sabres replaced top hat and tails today when starry-eyed sweethearts Darth Vader and Princess Leia tied the knot.

And the pair - otherwise known as Saltaire couple Geoff Cummings and Kath Kendall - turned a few heads as they arrived for their big day - not in a galaxy far far away but at Bradford Register Office.

The Star Wars fanatics decided to make it a Valentine's Day wedding to remember by dressing up as their heroes from the classic 1977 sci-fi movie.

The ceremony included the immortal line "may the force be with you'' and music from the film was played as Kath and her Jedi knight in shining black armour signed the register.

Armed with a holstered light sabre Geoff, 29, wore replicas of the gloves, boots, bodysuit and full head mask worn in the movie by arch villain Darth Vader, the Jedi knight corrupted by the 'dark side'.

Meanwhile Kath, 27, was in more traditional bridal white as she was transformed into a princess for the day. She wore a copy of the character's white robes, rounding off the look with a Princess Leia wig.

Following their vows the couple read specially written poems to each other with Kath's including a host of sci-fi references.

Geoff, who has been blind since being struck down with glaucoma in the mid-1980s, and partially-sighted Kath, met at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford ten years ago. They decided to marry after the birth of daughter Phaaron in December.

Geoff, an unemployed writer who hopes to set up his own catering business specialising in private dinner parties, said: "We're doing this because we're mad Star Wars fans.

"It was the first film I ever saw and think it's the greatest movie ever. I'm always putting the videos or music on and this will fulfil my childhood fantasy of dressing up as Darth Vader.

"I've always been drawn to sinister characters and he's the personification of evil - he's so cool, calm and collected and really is the man.

"The outfit is the business and when I'm wearing all that gear you can't tell it's me.

"I don't think the registrar knew we were dressing up so I think he was a bit surprised when he saw Darth Vader and Princess Leia walking in.

"Our friends know we're into Star Wars but I'd just told them I was wearing a black suit so they were surprised. Londoner Geoff added: "We haven't got a huge amount of mone for a big do but wanted to show how much we love each other by making the day really special and one nobody will forget.''
