A woman foiled the attempt of two men to snatch a nine-year-old girl from a street near her school. Police are hunting the men who struck at 3.45pm last Friday near Highfield Middle School in Keighley.

Detectives believe the men were on the prowl in the area. They had been parked in a silver-coloured Ford Escort in nearby Spencer Street.

Insp Allan Gee, of Keighley police, says: "The girl was waiting to be collected when a silver car containing two men stopped beside her. Both men got out and attempted to force her into the vehicle. They were disturbed by a woman who was passing by and they released the girl and got back into the car and drove off."

He says the girl was unhurt and the woman left the scene.

Officers are appealing for the woman to come forward because they hope she could help in identifying the men. They also want to hear from anyone who can identify the car or who saw it in the area at the time.

The men are described as white, and aged between 20 and 30. The first wasabout 5ft 5ins tall, of medium build and wearing a black Umbro top, black woollen hat and dark blue jeans. The second man was about 5ft 8ins tall, of medium build and wearing white jeans and a red jacket.

Anyone with information should telephone Keighley CID on o1535 617085.
