COUGARS could make club history against Wigan on Sunday - with a record breaking score.

The clubs have met five times before in the Challenge Cup since 1908, and Keighley have scored a total of six points.

Their closest encounter was a 12-3 defeat at Lawkholme Lane when they met in the second round of the competition back in the 1955-56 season.

They followed that up by scoring three points when they were knocked out in the 1961-62 season with Wigan running in 25 points at the other end.

Keighley failed to score in their first three meetings, which took place in 1908-9, 1921-22 and 1945-46.

On Sunday they only need to sneak over for one try to break their record of three points in a match - or two penalties would do.

"Wigan is probably the best team in the world at the moment, and every member of the team will be out to give it their best shot - but this time we will really need the support of our fans," said captain Jason Ramshaw.

Wigan who are still waiting to start their Super League campaign, will be determined to launch their season with a bang, and stop the Cougars scoring.

Andy Farrell will also have one eye on the possibility of scoring 16 points to take his career total to 1,000-points for Wigan Warriors.

Currently the Wigan captain is on 986 points, including 38 tries and 419 goals including six drop goals in a total of 164 matches.

He is the joint holder of most Super League goals in a match with 11 against St Helens and Paris St Germain.

Farrell also has fond memories of Keighley, he made his senior debut for Wigan as a substitute in a Regal Trophy second round home tie against the Cougars on November 24, 1991. Keighley were beaten 32-8 in that match.

Cougar coach John Kain's biggest headache is worrying about the threat of injuries to his young squad.

"As far as the game itself is concerned there is no pressure on us at all. For the players it is a chance to test themselves against some of the best players in the world, and they should learn a tremendous amount on Sunday."Each of our players will be setting their own personal goals and they will be able to watch how the Wigan lads perform - at very close quarters.

"One thing is for sure, Wigan won't have given a minute's thought to the possibility of us winning - but we can dream."

Club chairman, Howard Carter called for a massive show of support for the team, and warned that there would be no turnstyles open to pay on the day as the match has been designated 'all-ticket'.

However, there are still tickets available, and the Cougar Shop in Cavendish Court is to be open from 11am to 2pm on Sunday to cope with late demand.

John Kain added: "I'll be very surprised if Wigan don't win the Super League this season. They have a very, very strong team and they have ben re-united with John Monie who was coach at Central Park through the most successful years in the club's history.

"But the money they pay for just one of their star players in a year would pay for our entire playing staff, the coaches, and office staff put together. We are virtually starting out from scratch - but we will get better week after week."

n Cougar Cubs under-16's are to play a curtain-raiser game before the Silk Cut Challenge Cup match. Their game will kick off at 1pm.
