The search is on to find Silsden's missing Roll of Honour. The book, which records the names of the town's servicemen and women, appears to have been missing for many years.

It was thought it was on display in the town's library but staff there cannot recall seeing it. The case that used to hold the book is now gathering dust in the council chamber.

Now parish council vice-chairman Michael Elsmore is appealing for members of the public to help in the search. "I have asked all around the town without much success," he says. "Perhaps there might be someone out there who does know where it is."

Former Silsden urban district council worker Desmond Pritchard says he can remember the book very clearly. "It was on display for many years in the reading room in the old library in the town hall," says Mr Pritchard. "It was in a case. The book was about 15 inches tall and two feet wide."

Mr Pritchard thinks the book was taken off display when the town hall was refurbished in the 1960s andmay have been taken away at local government reorganisation in 1974.

Emmie Harding-Hill, a former parish councillor who is also involved with the Royal British Legion, also remembers the book. "The pages were a yellowish colour and the writing was in red and black ink," she says.

A similar book is kept at St James' parish church but the Rev John Cooper says it is not the book the parish council is looking for. He says the church's book was made in around 1921 by the college of art in Keighley. "It is a beautiful bound book with lovely calligraphy," he says. "It lists those who fought in the First World War, not just those who died."

A spokesman for Bradford council says: "Bradford council has no record of a Silsden roll of honour. We have discussed this matter with the current Keighley librarian and former local librarians but we can find no evidence that the document ever existed."
