Generous Keighley people are continuing to donate mon-ey to help fund treatment in Mexico for cancer sufferer Correena Done.

Correena, 36, flew to Mexico last Thursday with her husband Adrian and daughter Laura, five, thanks to fundraising efforts co-ordinated by family and friends.

With conventional medicine able to offer no further help against the disease she is pinning her hopes on alternative treatment which began at a Tijuana clinic on Monday. Sufficient cash to send the family for a month's stay was raised in five weeks but fund-raising is continuing to support them in the longer term.

Thanks to events large and small £11,600 was raised by the beginning of last week. Since then Keighley Lions have donated £300, a Sutton shop £55 from a collection and staff and residents at Keighley's Farish House £145 from a coffee morning.

Pupils at Bront' Middle School are making and selling cakes and coffee, and the main fundraisers plan a karaoke night.

"Everyone has put such alot of effort in," says Correena's friend Elizabeth Taylor. "We want to thank the Keighley News for publicity and everyone who has helped so far."

The appeal organisers are now taking a rest for a couple of weeks before launching into action again to raise more funds for further treatment for Correena. She will be in Mexico for a month, before returning to England with three months' supply of treatment.

Each month's treatment costs £1,000.

Correena's cousin Jackie Turton says: "The first appeal was just to get Correena to Mexico, but after her stay there she will need further treatment. People may think no more sponsor money is needed now, but it is, for when she comes back home."

Before Correena and her family left for Mexico a poem was sent to her from a woman called Kathy, who suffers from cancer herself, and her husband Jim.

The couple saw Correena on TV's Calendar programme - she has been on three times - and dedicated the poem to her.

Keighley's Holy Family School has already raised more than £1,000 for the appeal, with money still coming in from sponsored events.

Yesterday teacher Jackie Turton hoped to raise £150 by wearing school uniform for a day.

Pupils at Holy Family raised £210 with their band, Sugarfiend, which performed at Robbo's pub last month. A total of £2,237 was made from the event. A school disco, also held last month, raised £480 and another £200 was brought in from school dances.

One of the first events to be held in aid of the appeal was a benefit night at the Three Sisters Hotel, Brow Top Road, Haworth, on Thursday, January 22. A special thankyou goes out to Mick and Jackie O'Neill, the two bands, Blitz and the Wild Rovers, which gave up their time to play at the event and to comedian Mike Farrell who helped provide the entertainment.

A sale of raffle tickets prior to the night raised £800 and £4,000 was raised on the night itself.

Donations can be paid into a special account a Lloyds Bank, Keighley, number 1170172.
