Cheaper fares look unlikely for travellers who hope to use Cross Hills' new railway station.

North Yorkshire county council has indicated that it is unable to finance a reduced-fares system. This means fares will be set by Regional Railways in time for the station's proposed opening before the year 2000.

Plans for the station, based on the designs of Cononley and Steeton/Silsden stations, have been discussed over the last three years. The planned site is at a county council depot on the A6068, near the Hanson store. The council is in the process of reviewing the funding package for the proposed station, which looks set to be built in the next two years.

Plans are afoot to raise the platform level at Cononley railway station which is well below the required height. Railtrack will hopefully carry out the work later this year.
