Two Bradford players - Howard Mawson and Wayne Cooper - have qualified from the Yorkshire Area stage of the Bowring Leisure English Amateur Championship at Cuedos Snooker Club.

Mawson probably had his best ever win in defeating CIU national champion John Moss (Rotherham) 4-1, completing victory with a break of 112.

He then defeated Andrew Garner (Sheffield) 4-0. Cooper saw off Chris Walker 4-2 and Carlo Gianacovo, also of Sheffield, 4-1. Bramley's Craig Butler, who plays at Cue Gardens, also qualified, beating former Yorkshire champion Martin Finnigan (Sheffield) and Howard Brazil (Leeds).

Butler was in cracking form, making a century break in each match - a best-of-the-day 124 against Finnigan, who was beaten 4-1, and 116 against Brazil, who failed to win a frame.

Kevin Firth beat Sajid Khan 4-2 in the Bradford derby and defeated Andy Curtis (Doncaster) 4-0, but lost 4-1 to Robert Oldfield (Goole) in the qualifier. Matthew Holt went even closer, seeing off Simon Stockwell (Halifax) 4-1, but losing 4-3 to England junior international Craig Taylor (Thorne), having pulled back three times.

The other qualifier was Alan Edmonds (Grimsby) - son of the former champion Ray, who is now a TV commentator.

Bradford's billiards team defeated Huddersfield No 1 5-2 at Springwood Bowling Club in the Yorkshire Inter-District League.

Mark Hirst had breaks of 57 and 43 in defeating Ted Warren 200-42, and Richard Lodge made breaks of 52 and 41 in beating Brian Cousen 200-114. Tony Clegg prevented a whitewash, defeating Alan Firth 200-166.

Firth (Cue Gardens) made the highest break so far in the Bradford Championship - 77 in his 4-1 third round defeat of John Smith (Lilycroft WMC).
