Royal Mail admits it is concerned about allegations of bullying and intimidation at Keighley sorting office.

The Communication Workers Union has written to Royal Mail North East on behalf of more than 100 workers at the Oakworth Road sorting office expressing concerns about the style of management there.

The letter, sent under Royal Mail's grievance procedure, is the result of unrest among staff. It follows the sacking and reinstatement of two postal delivery workers accused of wilfully delaying the mail.

Both sackings occurred within a year and the two workers were reinstated following appeals. A union spokesman says alternative ways of disciplining them could have been used rather than dismissal. "There is a feeling that it was an unnecessary exercise which has created unrest," he says.

He claims staff remain concerned about the manner in which the sorting office operates for both employees and the general public. He says there is a climate of mistrust.

A Royal Mail spokesman says there is an agreed procedure with unions for dealing with such serious allegations. "We are currently in talks with the union which we hope will lead to better working conditions and long-term job security for our staff and also further improvement in services to our customers," he says.
