PHOENIX are just two points away from clinching promotion to the Premier Division of the West Riding County Amateur League.

They carved out a 2-1 victory over Otley Town on Wednesday night to go seven points clear at the top of the First Division - and now need just two points from their last three games to be absolutely certain of taking the championship.

Sean Bonner scored the first of the Keighley side's goals against Otley and McCormack followed up to make certain of victory.

On Saturday Phoenix entertain third placed Pontefract Borough and a win will clinch the title.

The following week they play bottom club Morley Town, and Phoenix already have a superior goal difference to other clubs challenging for top spot.

"The title is virtually theirs unless something incredible happens," said a league spokesman.

Phoenix also reached the Keighley Cup final with a 3-1 win over Keighley.

Danny Spencer came close to scoring twice in the first half, but it was captain Mark Atkins who opened the scoring with a powerful shot past keeper Paul Stewart.

Phoenix pressed forward for most of the first half, but the Keighley defence held firm with brothers Darren and Richard Harwood and Shaun and Liam Rowley keeping Keighley in the game with some resolute defending.

The second half saw Keighley raise their game with Jonal Ali going close twice before scoring the equaliser with a short from outside the box.

Phoenix continued to play the better football and were rewarded with two further goals from Danny Spencer and a solo effort from Joe Bryceland.

Phoenix also returned to league football with a 4-0 win over) Salts and now need only four points to win the First Division. Goals from Stuart Hudson, Mark Atkins, Ben McCormack and Martin Ross secured the points.
