YOUTH workers are taking to the streets of Skipton in a bid to help reluctant youngsters to come forward with their problems.

The Detached Youth Worker scheme involves experienced volunteers approaching groups of young people who gather around the town in the evenings.

It is hoped that the workers can help root out those with problems, but are afraid to seek advice for fear of being seen as "uncool".

Based at Skipton's Youth and Community Centre on Otley Street, workers venture out on Wednesday and Friday nights.

Denise Burton, district manager for community education in Craven, said: "More young people are coming into our centre, but a large number won't.

"For many youngsters it's not cool to come to a place like this, which can be seen as an extension of school and the establishment.

"We need to make ourselves more accessible for them. Of the people we have approached, one is interested in soccer and we can help him fulfil his ambitions."

Detached youth worker Pamela Scott said: " What we are establishing is youth workers in the central Skipton area.

"We work on Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Due to the poor weather recently we have not had the opportunities to build relationships with groups hanging around.

"There are not many stationary groups about. We strongly believe there is a need for this service in the Skipton area to show young people that we are focusing on them."
