Bradford City have been given a huge boost by talented defender Andy O'Brien signing an extension to his contract to keep him at Valley Parade until 2003.

The 18-year-old has confirmed his immense promise this season with some superb displays at the heart of the defence and in midfield.

O'Brien made his debut last year and has shown great maturity with City hoping he will be the cornerstone of their defence for years to come. His contract had been due to run out in two years time.

Manager Paul Jewell was delighted to see O'Brien's future secured. "He deserves it as his attitude and performances have been outstanding. At times we tend to forget that he is only 18 years old and that is probably the biggest compliment I can pay him.

"Andy did very well when he came into the side last year and he has improved dramatically this season. This is superb news for the club."

O'Brien was selected for the Football League Under 21 side this season and is already being tipped for further international honours.

Meanwhile, City travel to Crewe Alexandra tomorrow hoping to boost their chances of finishing in the top ten of the First Division.

However their plans have been hit by midfielder Nigel Pepper being ruled out due to the bruised ribs he received in last weekend's game with Queens Park Rangers.

Darren Moore has returned to training this week but the City boss says a decision will not be taken about his fitness until later today.

Jewell is determined to finish City's season on a high and is looking to reward the club's travelling fans with a victory.

"They have been great all season and I hope we can give them a good performance. We have six points to play for and it would be superb to round off our away season with a win.

"Nigel Pepper has no chance of playing as he is having difficulty breathing when running. Wayne Jacobs is also doubtful for the game but no decision has been taken yet."

Crewe have enjoyed a successful season following their promotion through the play-offs last season. However their squad has been ravaged by injury and manager Dario Gradi is expected to play two members of his youth side - captain David Wright and midfielder Kenny Lunt.
