Police are to get tough with teenage yobs in Cullingworth, Wilsden and Denholme.

Bingley Inspector David Druquer has vowed to crack down on the hard core of teenage troublemakers after a series of incidents over the past few months.

Insp Druquer said: "The main problem in Denholme at the moment is the unacceptable level of youth behaviour. It has gone beyond what is normally expected of young people. We know they are targeting vehicles on the main road and we know they are causing general disruption to ordinary people."

In the most serious incident, earlier this month, shots were fired at the window of a car being driven through Denholme, causing it to brake.

He added: "They are causing general unhappiness to people and I am determined to make our presence felt. I will be deploying our resources accordingly.''

He said if yobs stepped out of line they were in danger of being arrested.

"There's plenty to do. There's a youth club in Denholme. There are no excuses for this behaviour," he added.

Bingley Rural ward councillor Simon Cooke said: "At the sheltered accommodation in Forester Court in Denholme we have had too many incidents of people ringing doorbells and knocking on doors at 2am.

"It's intimidating. The residents don't know whether it is kids larking about or not. I think the police are quite right to clamp down on this sort of behaviour."

Insp Druquer said what was happening in Denholme was not unique but experienced also in Cullingworth and Wilsden where the same problems were being encountered.

He added: "The people who live there are just as fed up with a small nucleus of troublemakers with a number of hangers on."
