Paul Jewell will kick several players out of Bradford City this summer if he is handed the manager's job.

That was his damning assessment after watching his side's "embarrassing" performance in the 5-0 thrashing at Crewe Alexandra.

The City boss was so furious with his side that he sent them back on to the pitch after only two minutes of the half-time break to face ridicule from the home fans.

Jewell said: "There are too many people in our team who are not good enough. That is a fact of the matter and this is not a one-off.

"That is something that has been borne out by the performances at Tranmere, Bury and Crewe. There is not enough of them who deserve to be at Bradford City."

Jewell also revealed that he was "hurt" by the first half performance as City's defence capitulated and they were 4-0 down at the break.

The City boss apologised for his side's performance for the third time in the last four away games but admitted that this is now wearing a bit thin with the fans.

"Every goal they scored was like a knife going in my stomach. We were lying down and I thought it was bad against Bury.

"After 20 minutes there was nothing in the game but we went AWOL at the back. We were letting them shoot willy-nilly.

"I can only use the word performance loosely as it was an absolute nightmare. You can apologise to the supporters all you like but that is wearing a bit thin now.

"But I do apologise to them. And that is why I sent them out at half-time to embarrass the players.

"I was embarrassed to be the manager of that team in the first half. I said a few words and just said 'Get out there and I hope you are as embarrassed as I am'. When it was four at half-time I was worried it would be a lot more.

"Our defending, if that is a word you can use, was non-existent and it was like a knife through butter."

One consolation for Jewell was the performance of youngster Gareth Grant , who came on as a tactical switch for Rob Steiner after only 33 minutes.

The 17-year-old showed several good touches and nearly capped a great week by hitting a 20-yard shot on to the post.

Jewell said: "I gave the young lads a bit of a run around and they were the only bright spark. It would have been lovely for Gareth to score but his chance will come again. He is a light at the end of a very dark tunnel at the moment."
