Teenage acting prodigy Matthew Green is following in the footsteps of some of Britain's greatest comic talents.

He has won rave reviews for his role in the latest show by the famous Cambridge Footlights group.

Matthew, 19, of Springs Lane, Ilkley, has just finished his first year doing English at Christ's College, Cambridge.

And he has earned critical acclaim for his part in the group's summer revue Between A Rock And A Hard Place.

Phil Douast, writing in The Guardian, said: "With sticky-out ears and a rosy complexion, knock-knees and a painfully thin body, he's made for physical comedy.

"He upstages the rest of them just by standing there. Definitely one to watch."

The university group Footlights has long been Britain's best-known breeding ground for comedy. Among the stars who cut their teeth there as students are Peter Cook, Graeme Garden, Jonathan Miller, John Cleese and David Frost.

Former Ilkley Grammar School pupil Matthew said he was delighted by the critical reaction to the show, which is now heading out on a national tour after completing a two-week run in Cambridge.

"It was very flattering to have reviews like the one in The Guardian," said Matthew.

"It's one of the few student groups that actually does a national tour so it tends to get noticed. It's brilliant. It's very inspiring going into the Footlights club rooms and seeing pictures of all the people who are well-known now on the walls.''

Between A Rock And A Hard Place will play at various venues around the UK this summer, including a three-week run at the Edinburgh Festival. The closest date to Bradford is at the Harrogate Theatre on July 15 at 7.30pm.
