Frightened Bradford families claimed today that road safety schemes were putting their lives in danger.

People living in Parsonage Road, Laisterdyke, say drivers avoid traffic calming schemes in surrounding streets to speed down their road which has no safety measures.

Now the families have started a petition in a bid to get road humps which would slow the drivers.

The battle follows an accident when a youngster was spun off his bike into the road after being struck by a passing vehicle.

He was not seriously hurt.

But mum of three Sharon Mallett, 29, said: "We are all terrified that something serious is going to happen soon.

"The other streets might be safer, but we are suffering because of it."

Mrs Mallett said her seven-year-old daughter was blind in one eye and had problems in judging distances.

"The traffic even speeds down the road in the night.

"People seem to just want to race about and I had my car written off by a stolen vehicle."

Ward Councillor John Ryan said: "I have been approached by a lot of residents who are very concerned.

"The traffic calming in the other streets has had a very bad spin-off for them.

"Apart from that, it is a bus route which is also used by heavy vehicles and is between the city's two main artery roads.

"And to make things worse, there is a big Morrisons store at the bottom end.

"I think it could be argued that this is the very street of all streets that needs a scheme.

"I have written to the area panel asking for priority for Parsonage Road when it decides on schemes."

The chairman of the Council's Highways Committee, Coun Phil Thornton, promised a full investigation of the complaint.

He said: "We are always concerned when we hear about the potential for accidents."
