A 23-year-old man who had been questioned by police in connection with the death of a Pudsey pensioner has been released without charge.

The man was arrested on Monday at his home in Leeds by detectives investigating the death of John Nutter after an attack by masked raiders.

Police applied on Wednesday for an extension of time to continue questioning the man but released him from custody yesterday. A spokesman said inquiries were continuing into Mr Nutter's death.

Mr Nutter, 68, died after raiders burst in on him and his sister-in-law Mary Skilton, 56, at their home in Woodhall Park Crescent, West Pudsey on July 20.

The pair were attacked and sprayed in the face and Mr Nutter died - possibly from shock, although the cause is unclear.

Mrs Skilton needed 12 stitches in a head wound. The pair had gold Rolex watches stolen and the robbers also took an Edwardian ring.

Mrs Skilton later made an appeal to the public to give information about the attackers and said it had wrecked her life.

She said Mr Nutter, a business man who held regular livestock auctions at Trafalgar Road off Manningham Lane, would never have done anyone any harm.

Detectives raided addresses in Bradford and Leeds after the attack and arrested three suspects, who were subsequently released without charge.

The man who has just been released was not involved in that round of questioning.

Last week detectives gave details of a stolen Volvo car which they believe was abandoned by the killers in West Bowling about an hour after the attack.

People are asked to give information by ringing the incident room on Bradford 376915.
