I don't normally single out people in this column but this week I am going to do just that. The reason for my reluctance is that it may cause embarrassment to that person.

But risking wrath, here we go. Have you ever tried saying no to that wonderful man Charlie Bhowmick? I have, and just like many others before me it fell on deaf ears.

"I would if I could, but I can't," I said to Charlie. "I have a previous engagement."

"But I've got you down for doing this," said Charlie. As a result I spent part of last Sunday with other members of the team in Devonshire Park for the first ever Highfield People's Action Group family fun day.

I can say with my hand on my heart that I am truly glad I did. The people living in the Highfield area have decided to do something about their lot and have formed an action group.

Their first major event was the fun day - and what a rip roaring success it turned out to be. Buzzing around in the background all of the time was Charlie. What a great team player he is. I know I have singled out Charlie but my comments are aimed at the community for demonstrating what can be done. Some of the words in the programme spelled out the idea behind the event - they hope the Highfield community " will point the way forwards to a friendlier and more caring, cohesive community." In all parts of this district similar events have been staged. It's great.

Sadly I had to leave Devonshire Park early to keep the other appointment. As I said farwell Charlie said: "You haven't forgotten you're coming to speak at a meeting?"

No, Charlie I haven't. I wouldn't dare.
