SETTLE were humiliated at Great Harwood when they were skittled out for just 18 runs chasing a total of 133 on a rain affected pitch.

It wasn't the lowest score in the Vaux Ribblesdale League, but it will be one Settle will find hard to forget.

Surinder Bhave, captain in the absence of the unavailable David Morrell lost the toss and saw the opponents advance to 72 before Colin Johnson removed Daniel Cheesebrough for 43. He quickly accounted for the other opener, Ian Whittle, who had made 29 and when Arner quickly followed it appeared that Settle's fortunes had changed.

Professional Charles Dagnall and Liam Deasey then added 33 before the former was dismissed leaving the home side 113 for four off 30 overs.

Bhave then brought himself into the attack and with Andrew Fergie removed the last six Harwood batsmen for just 20 runs. The bowlers were assisted by some excellent catching by the Settle fielders, who took nine catches.

All that was needed was for Settle to knock off the 134 runs required for seven points but it all went pear-shaped.

Bhave and Morris found it hard to score against Dagnall and skipper Gordon Simpson and wickets began to fell rapidly. A lot was resting on the shoulders of last week's centurion Mark Verden but a lot was resting on him when Hulse and Fergie were dismissed without scoring leaving Settle on 10 for five.

There was no way back for Settle and they eventually were all out in the 25th over, Simpson finishing with the amazing figures of 12-7-7-8Despite the embarrassing batting performance, Settle at least took two points for bowling out their opponents, which lifted them above Whalley and Oswaldtwistle in the table.

Barnoldswick's game against Baxenden ended in a tie, both sides finishing on 156.

After losing Graham Harker with the score on four, Ian Scothern and professional Paul Beech took the score along to 94 before the next wicket fell.

When Scothern had gone for 40 and Beech for 54, Barlick failed to build on the impetus, despite Michael Scothern's unbeaten 18.

Baxenden lost an early wicket to Michael Scothern but professional Usher and M Rishton then added 99 for the second wicket. They were 140 for three at one point but a couple of run outs and Scothern's fine spell closed them down as they finished on 156 for nine, their ninth wicket being run out on the last ball as he chased victory.

Padiham had a 40 run win over Earby. The home side raced to 166-8 with Andy McNicholas scoring 51 and wickets fell steadily as Earby fell well short of the target.

Padiham's was the highest score in the League, showing just how difficult wickets are to score on in this poor summer
